About Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency
Overseen by Dr. Frank Dennehy, Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency Program offers opportunities for students who are interested in family medicine. Operating in northwestern Virginia, it provides five residents per class with three years of experience in treating patients from urban and rural environments, including Appalachia. Members practice out of Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal and Winchester Medical Center in Winchester while gaining further education through its connections to the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Furthermore, Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency prepares its residents for work in global medicine and behavioral health.
Over the past several years, the residency program has received numerous honors. The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine awarded it Best Research Paper in 2009 for the paper “Timing of Colonoscopy.” Three of the faculty received the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians Teacher of the Year Award, another earned its Family Physician of the Year award, and two residents placed on its board of directors. In 2013, the American Academy of Family Physicians provided it with a grant to research newborn body mass index and childhood obesity. Additionally, it garnered a large 2014-2015 research grant from the Virginia Center on Aging to investigate Alzheimer's disease and physician prescribing.
